This month I linked up with some of the hottest players in the web / flash design industry, to exploit the smoothly developed layouts and lush animation that this company has to offer. I hooked up with Rob see get a quick insite into the mind of a leading professional and to find out what makes him tick.
How did you first get started in design? What was it that caught your interest initially?
I first got started in design when I was in school and became fascinated with logos. I started off copying other logos and drawing them on my books, before I started designing my own. Just like a graffiti tag, logos may seem simple and basic to a lot of people but it takes a lot of skill to come up with a graphic that's memorable and conveys the right image.
Who are some of the friends you have made through your work?
I've made several friends through my work over the years, mostly other local web designers. These include Devstars, Kanbee and Mozbe, all based in Chiswick.
What do you think your style/theme says about you?
My style is quite minimalist with a smart, professional, sometimes urban look and smooth page transitions and animations. Not sure what that says about me...
How would you describe your current career?
Going from strength to strength, Volatyle is constantly evolving to meet ever increasingly demanding clients
Describe your ideal client and ideal working relationship
The best clients are easy to communicate with and not afraid to leave most of the design work to me. Sometimes showing clients an early preview requires them to use their imagination to fill in the gaps, and can backfire if they can't see how it will all come together in the end. It's always best when they trust your skills as a professional and mainly just leave you to it.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
No boss, no commuting to work, a wide variety of projects and picking your own hours
What would you like to contribute to your field?
I would like to provide a complete web design service allowing people to develop their websites to feature work from the best programmers, designers, artists and optimisers available. I love collaborating with other designers on projects so bringing more professionals and freelancers together like this would be great
How do you enjoy your spare time?
Mainly pubs/bars, golf, snooker and
studying Wing Chun Kung Fu.
